Happy New Year. I’m on a brief vacation, so I hope you understand if I have been doing other things. That also means that there might be a couple of typos here.

Questions

  1. With work on it beginning in 1995, Peberholm Island was created to serve as the link between the Drogden Tunnel and what? The use of a tunnel was required because of the need to keep more vertical structures out of range of Kastrup Airport.

  2. While at UC San Diego he worked with others to apply the backpropagation algorithm to multi-layer neural networks. Following his notable resignation in 2023, he said, “right now, they're not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. But I think they soon may be.” Who?

  3. What is the largest member of order Carnivora? Though its females weigh usually no more than 1,500 pounds, its males can weigh up to 8,200 pounds. Its oppositely-named counterpart, Mirounga angustirostris, is not quite as heavy, with males topping out at just 5,000 pounds.

  4. The national drink of Latvia is a liqueur called Riga Black what? The term can more generally designate any number of high-alcohol content herbal liqueurs from Eastern Europe. As it is thought to have been derived from the name of a Biblical curative, the word also can be applied to various aromatic resins extracted from herbs and bushes. A visual clue is provided below.

  5. Provide the name of the world leader who fits the following sequence best. First, the organization - historically, the first of its particular kind - that claims Edwidge Danticat, Wanda Sykes, and Kamala Harris among its members. Second, how a Tokyo neighborhood is known in brief, as reflected in the name of a musical group. Third, who sanctioned the May 2024 victory of GCHG Surrey Sage (better known as Sage).

  6. In the musical & Juliet, the alternative story begins with Juliet waking up to find Romeo dead. She then sings what song? As with the other songs in that jukebox musical, Max Martin had a hand in its creation. This particular song is the best-selling single co-written by Martin based on physical copies sold, though it probably trails “Blinding Lights,” which was also co-written by Martin, once streaming sales are factored.

  7. The senior person of this name won the World Rally Championship in 1990 and 1992, and made the news recently for attempting, at age 62, the Dakar Rally yet again - and understandably so, because he wants to defend last year's title. The junior person of this name has won four Formula One Grands Prix in ten seasons, and he also made the news recently when he announced his move from Ferrari to Williams. What father-and-son combo?

  8. It was Saint Augustine's moral sanction and Emperor Honorius's legal sanction that suppressed it initially, with a formal statement at a church council against its beliefs not coming until the Council of Trent. What was the name given to the movement which led to a schism in the Christian church of North Africa in the fourth and fifth centuries? Its primary departure from standardly-accepted doctrine maintained that only sacraments from priests pure in practice and belief were valid - meaning that a church member baptized by a fallen priest had to seek out that sacrament once again, or risk damnation. More cheekily, this could refer to the fandom of the actor who won an Oscar at the ceremony held in 1940, but whose subsequent career was limited to a handful of movies because of his severe asthma.

  9. While on his first circumnavigation commanding the Astrolabe, he explored the southern coast of Australia and much of New Zealand, as well as various smaller islands of the South Pacific. It was during that voyage that he coined the words Micronesia and Melanesia. His second voyage (shown) reached Antarctica twice, with his landing at the Dumoulin Islands made notable because he named the area on the far side of that archipelago in honor of his wife. Who?

  10. In 2014, the Kreeger had an exhibit subtitled “The Lure of the Forest,” looking back at the work of what artist? Cherry Pantomime, shown below, is a reasonable representation of her work, as typically she would cut and press wood before casting it in bronze. You may either provide her birth surname - reflecting her relationship to a notable Czechoslovak leader of a bygone era - or her married surname - reflecting her relationship to a notable figure in American foreign policy - as your answer.
